The Life of John Lorne Campbell of Canna by Ray Perman

About

The Man Who Gave Away His Island by Ray Perman is the  biography of a remarkable man, John Lorne Campbell, who bought the Hebridean island of Canna and, with his American musician wife Margaret Fay Shaw, made it an international centre of Gaelic culture.

Ray fell in love with Canna on his first visit in 1977 when he went to interview Campbell about a campaign to save the island’s ferry service.

  1. Hello. I am the Editor of the Clan Campbell Society (North America). Neill Campbell of Inverneill suggested I see this website. I was in contact with Inverneill as I am helping with production of a book by Sir Ilay Campbell of Succoth, Bt., on his collection of bookplates, among which is one for John Campbell of Canna.

I was wondering if the Clan Campbell Society (North America) could procure a ‘review copy,’ and a review will appear in an upcoming issue of the quarterly Journal of the Clan Campbell Society (N.A.). I also see a good story here.

    Anyway, please let me know.

    Regards, Paul Campbell

  2. This message is intended for Mr Ray Perman.
I write this message to you regarding a project close to my heart, involving the Hebridean Isles of Uist. I would like to share a couple of insights with you regarding my humble donation of ‘Trademarks’ to support a tourism initiative for a disadvantaged group of community’s that has received very strong political support, and encouragement from ‘The Scotch Whisky Association.’ I’m aware of your involvement with ‘The Hutton Institute’ and would very much welcome your views on a couple ideas regarding the above. Kind regards, Gordon…
